Can Farm Data Replace Collateral?
Traditional agricultural lending often starts with one question: “What collateral do you have?” For smallholder farmers, that question can end the conversation before it begins. DigiFarmer is exploring a different approach. Our technology team is integrating up to 50 satellite-derived agricultural data parameters into an automated farmer credit-scoring framework. The broader system can increasingly combine satellite intelligence with soil information, farmer activity, production patterns and eventually transaction history. Tom Patrick and the development team are also automating report storage and notifications so that more agricultural activity can become structured, usable data. The long-term opportunity is significant. Instead of asking farmers only what assets they own, lenders could increasingly understand how they farm and that could make agricultural credit more intelligent, more measurable and ultimately more accessible.
